Why these two get confused
This is the warm/cool boundary at the top of the chroma scale, and it is the pair where the usual advice about "bright people" stops being useful. Both seasons want the loudest version of a color. Both look tired in anything muted. Both carry natural contrast.
The split is temperature, and at high saturation temperature is harder to read than it is lower down, because saturated colors are visually assertive enough to distract from what they are doing to the skin.
Bright Spring's brights lean warm: coral, tangerine, apple green, bright yellow. Bright Winter's lean cool: hot pink, emerald, cobalt, true red. There is genuine overlap in the middle — both can wear a good turquoise — which is why the test needs to use colors from the extremes rather than the shared ground.
The test that settles it
Bright coral against hot pink. Hold one on each side of the face. Bright Spring takes the coral cleanly and finds the pink faintly cold. Bright Winter is the reverse.
Then check the white. Bright Spring wants warm white; pure white looks slightly harsh. Bright Winter wants pure white and finds warm white dingy. Put the two side by side in daylight and one will look clean while the other looks faintly dirty.
If muted colors consistently make you look tired, you are one of these two regardless — the coral-versus-pink test decides which.
