Why these two get confused

Both are cool and both carry high contrast. Both wear true black and pure white. The usual separators do nothing.

The difference is a ceiling. True Winter's colors are clear but not extreme — a true blue rather than an electric one, a crimson rather than a hot pink. Bright Winter's palette goes all the way up, and restraint actively works against it: a softened version of the right hue reads as a mistake rather than a subtler choice.

Bright Winter also sits closer to the Spring boundary, which shows in a few colors that would look faintly warm on a True Winter — a lemon yellow, a turquoise with some green in it.

The practical tell is how you feel about your own brightest clothes. Bright Winters usually own one or two very saturated pieces that they know work and cannot explain. True Winters generally do not.

The test that settles it

One hue, two intensities. A true blue against an electric cobalt. A crimson against a hot pink. If the brighter option looks correct rather than shouty, you are Bright Winter.

Then check the near-neutrals. Bright Winter can use icy pink and lemon as light neutrals. On a True Winter those look faintly odd, and icy lavender or icy blue work better.

Both must pass the black test. If black drains you, neither of these is your season regardless of how the brightness question goes.
