Why these two get confused
This pairing looks odd on paper and comes up constantly in practice, for one specific reason: people who look bad in black often conclude they need more contrast rather than less, and Winter is the season everyone has heard of.
The logic runs backwards. Looking wrong in black is evidence against Winter, not for it. True Winter is one of the few seasons genuinely anchored by black. Soft Summer is one of the seasons most obviously drained by it.

Check pure white too. True Winter wears it. Soft Summer does better in oatmeal, and finds pure white unforgiving.
