Why these two get confused
Both of these seasons sit at the deep end of the system, and both can carry weight that would flatten most other colorings. People in either one usually work out that they suit depth long before they work out which side of the warm line they are on.
The reason the confusion persists is that a Dark Autumn often looks better in black than in camel, which reads as evidence for Winter. It is not. It only means depth suits you more than lightness does — and both seasons agree on that. The question is not whether you can carry dark colors, it is which dark colors.
Dark Winter's darks are cool: navy, pine, deep purple, burgundy. Dark Autumn's are warm: dark olive, rust, deep teal, aubergine. Put those two lists side by side and the difference is obvious. Put one item from each next to a face and it takes a second look.
The test that settles it
Espresso against true black, at the jaw. This is the decisive test. If black looks crisp and espresso looks muddy, you are Dark Winter. If black looks like a hole cut out of the picture and espresso looks like an actual color, you are Dark Autumn.
Then check the light end. Icy white against warm cream. Dark Winter looks sharper in icy white. Dark Autumn looks healthier in cream, and slightly grey in the icy one.
If black works and cream also works, look at True Winter rather than either of these — you may be cooler and less neutral than you think.
