Why these two get confused
People who have correctly identified themselves as warm and muted often stop there and pick True Autumn by default, because it is the season most people have heard of. A meaningful share of them are actually Dark Autumn, and the tell is what happens at the light end of the palette.
True Autumn's range runs medium to medium-deep. Camel, gold, moss and rust all sit comfortably. Dark Autumn's range starts where True Autumn's ends and pushes deeper: dark olive rather than moss, aubergine rather than plum, espresso rather than chocolate.
The mistake goes one direction far more often than the other. Someone wearing True Autumn colors when they are a Dark Autumn looks slightly washed out. The colors are the right temperature, so nothing looks obviously wrong, and the result gets blamed on the garment.
Contrast helps too. Dark Autumn carries more of it — the gap between skin and hair tends to be wider.
The test that settles it
Camel. This is the whole test. Hold a proper camel next to your face. A True Autumn looks warmed by it. A Dark Autumn goes flat, and the face drops back behind the fabric.
Then confirm with depth. Dark olive against moss green, or aubergine against plum. If the deeper option in each pair looks better, you are Dark Autumn.
Gold works for both, so ignore the metal here. When a test that normally decides things gives you nothing, that is information: you are inside one family and looking at a value question.
