Dark Autumn hair works on two numbers, and once you know them you can walk into any salon and ask for the right thing instead of describing a mood. Every professional dye is coded level-dot-tone: the level is how light or dark, the tone is the direction of the color.

Level runs 1 to 10, where 1 is black and 10 is the lightest blonde. Tone is the digit after the decimal point, and it is standard across brands:
The tones you want are .3 gold, .4 copper and .5 mahogany. The tone to refuse is .1 ash, which is blue-based and the single fastest way to make a Dark Autumn look grey.
Your range is level 3 to 5 — dark brown through medium brown, with warmth in it. So the codes that suit this season read as 4.3, 4.5, 5.4, 3.5. Going lighter than level 6 starts to break the depth that defines the season; going to a level 2 or 1 black introduces a coldness the coloring does not have.
Going lighter is the more common mistake. Highlights lift the value out of the range that suits you and, because most lightening pulls warm-brassy rather than warm-rich, they usually land in the wrong kind of warmth as well.
If you are covering grey, ask for the same level with a .3 or .5 base rather than a neutral .0. Neutral bases on a warm-neutral season read flat.
What to ask for at the salon
What to say at the salon. "I want to stay around a level 4, and I want a gold or mahogany base — a 4.3 or a 4.5. Please keep ash out of it entirely."
That sentence does more than any photo, because it is the language the colorist is already working in. A reference photo gets interpreted; a level and tone gets mixed.
If they suggest ash to "cut the brassiness", ask for a .5 mahogany instead. Brassiness in this season is usually a level problem rather than a tone problem — the hair got lifted too light, and ash corrects the symptom by adding the one thing that fights your coloring.
