Soft Autumn and Soft Summer are the pair people confuse most often, and for good reason: both are muted, both are low contrast, and both look wrong in black. The split is undertone and nothing else. If gold jewelry looks natural on you and silver looks like it belongs to someone else, you are on this side of the line.

Muted and warm, in that order. The muting is what most people get right and the warmth is what they lose — usually by drifting toward the cooler end of a hue because it feels more sophisticated. It reads as slightly off rather than obviously wrong, which is what makes it hard to spot.

Cream, not white. Pure white is too cold and too absolute against a warm muted coloring; cream gives the same lift without the hard edge.

Black — too cold and too absolute. Soft chocolate instead.
Pure white — cream instead, for the same reason.
Icy pastels — they carry a coolness that fights the undertone, and they are light without being warm, which lands as washed out rather than soft.
Bright fuchsia — the classic wrong-turn purchase. It is both too cool and too saturated, and it wears the person rather than the reverse.

How to tell if you're really Soft Autumn
The only real question is Soft Autumn versus Soft Summer, and undertone is the entire answer — the muting and the low contrast are identical.
Silver and gold at the jaw, in daylight, no makeup. Gold should look like it belongs to your skin and silver should look like it is sitting on top of it. If the reverse is true, you are Soft Summer.
Second check: cream against pure white. Soft Autumns look healthier in cream. Soft Summers usually find cream slightly sallow and prefer a cool off-white.
If both metals look fine, test with color instead: dusty rose against dusty coral. Whichever makes your skin look even rather than blotchy points to your undertone.
