Why these two get confused
This is the most common misdiagnosis in the whole twelve-season system, and it happens because the two seasons share every trait that is easy to notice. Both are soft. Both have low contrast between skin, hair and eyes. Both are drained by pure white and flattened by true black. Someone reading a description of either will recognise themselves in both.
The trap is that the shared traits are the loud ones. Muting and low contrast are what you notice first, so people match on those and then pick between the two on something unreliable — usually hair color, which can be dyed, or a general sense of being a "warm person", which is not a color property.
Undertone is quiet by comparison. It does not announce itself, and it is the one thing that actually decides which of these two palettes will work.
If you get it wrong, the failure is subtle rather than obvious. A Soft Summer in Soft Autumn colors does not look dramatically bad — they look slightly sallow, slightly tired, and the effect is easy to blame on sleep. That is exactly why this pair is worth ten seconds of proper testing.
The test that settles it
Gold against silver at the jaw, in daylight, no makeup. Hold one on each side. On a Soft Autumn, gold looks like it belongs to the skin and silver looks like it is sitting on top of it. On a Soft Summer it is the other way round.
If both look acceptable, test with cream. Hold cream against a cool off-white. Soft Autumns look healthier in cream; Soft Summers usually find cream faintly sallow and prefer the cool one.
Still stuck? Dusty rose against dusty coral. Same muting, opposite undertone. Watch the skin rather than the fabric — whichever one makes your complexion look even rather than blotchy is pointing at your undertone.
