Light Summer vs Soft Summer

Same family, same cool undertone, different value. Light Summer is lighter and cannot carry mid-depth color; Soft Summer sits at medium and can. Soft navy at moderate depth separates them.

Why these two get confused

Both are cool and both are gentle, so the metal test gives you nothing — silver suits both. What differs is how much depth the coloring can hold before the color starts to dominate.

Light Summer is the lightest cool season. Its palette runs pale throughout, and its darkest usable neutral is a soft navy rather than anything approaching charcoal. Soft Summer sits a step deeper and can wear charcoal blue and slate comfortably.

There is a chroma difference as well — Soft Summer is the more muted of the two — but value is the more reliable axis to test, because depth is easier to judge than saturation.

The common error runs toward the deeper season. Someone light will buy Soft Summer's charcoal blue, find it acceptable rather than good, and never realise that a soft navy would have been better.

The test that settles it

Soft navy at moderate depth. Hold it at the jaw. A Soft Summer carries it easily. A Light Summer starts to look slightly overwhelmed — the fabric reads before the face does.

Then check the light end. Light Summer looks best in genuinely pale colors. If pastels have always suited you and mid-depth colors feel like a compromise, you are Light Summer.

Neither should wear black. If black is fine on you, you are in the winter family, not here.
